Recalling Country – a picture of home, heart and heritage
A special art project is bringing together family, culture and community as resident and local elder, Gloria, works on a deeply personal painting for an upcoming travelling art exhibition.
Titled, Recalling Country, the artwork depicts the local waters and surrounding mountains that shaped Gloria’s life. It’s a way to stay connected to her culture, heritage and places she holds close to her heart. “I’m very proud of my heritage,” she says. “This is a great opportunity to speak my language and tell that story.”
Family is very important to Gloria and she’s being lovingly supported in her project by her two daughters and grandchildren. “Together, we are collecting and foraging things like gum nuts to integrate into the artwork,” she says.
The residents and staff have been watching with interest as the painting progresses and are looking forward to seeing the finished work.
Manager, Marsha, says reenabling residents to rediscover or regain skills builds confidence and helps them stay independent. “We’re so happy to support Gloria with her art project. It’s been fantastic to watch her dedicate herself to this piece”, she says.
Recalling Country will take pride of place in the art exhibition that is planned to tour other aged care communities in the Apollo Care Alliance, sharing Gloria’s story, culture and love of country with a wider audience.
